Victoria in October: What to See, Do & Expect
October is an interesting month to visit Victoria. Summer is definitely over, but winter hasn't arrived. The big July and August crowds have disappeared, the days are getting shorter, the leaves are changing and downtown begins to settle into a much quieter rhythm. Personally, I think it's an underrated time to experience the city. You'll need to be a little more flexible about the weather than you would in July, but in return you get comfortable walking temperatures, fewer crowds and a version of Victoria that feels considerably more relaxed than it does during peak season. So, what is Victoria actually like in October? Here's what I'd tell someone who was thinking about coming. What Is the Weather Like in Victoria in October? Let's get the obvious question out of the way first: yes, it can rain. October is when we really start transitioning into our wetter season, but that doesn't mean you should expect a week of continuous rain. Victoria sits in the rain shadow of Washington State's Olympic Mountains, which gives us a much drier climate than many visitors expect from the Pacific Northwest. October can actually be wonderfully unpredictable. You might get a crisp, sunny afternoon that still feels a little like September, followed a couple of days later by wind and rain coming off the ocean. Sometimes you'll get a little of everything in the same day. The trick is not trying to plan your entire trip around a perfect weather forecast. Bring layers, comfortable walking shoes and a decent waterproof jacket and you'll be ready for most of what October throws at you. If there's a little rain in the forecast, don't worry too much about it. We've put together a separate guide to things to do in Victoria on a rainy day, because a wet afternoon really doesn't need to ruin a trip here. Downtown is compact, and there are plenty of museums, cafés, restaurants, pubs and shops to disappear into if the weather turns. October Is a Great Month for Exploring on Foot One of the biggest advantages of visiting Victoria in October is that it's simply comfortable to walk around. Victoria is an incredibly walkable city, particularly if you're staying downtown. The Inner Harbour, Government Street, Old Town and Chinatown are all within a relatively small area, and you can see an enormous amount of the city without ever getting into a car. October temperatures are generally well suited to spending a couple of hours wandering around. Throw on a jacket, grab a coffee and start walking. I'd spend some time around the Inner Harbour and then make my way through Old Town toward Chinatown, but don't just stick to the main streets. Some of the most interesting parts of Victoria are hidden in the little alleyways and courtyards between them. Fan Tan Alley gets most of the attention, but Market Square, Waddington Alley and the historic streets surrounding them are all worth exploring. Fall colours also begin changing the look of the city. Victoria gets plenty of attention for its spring flowers, but October can be beautiful in a completely different way, particularly when you combine the changing leaves with the brick buildings and historic architecture of downtown. The Summer Crowds Are Gone This is where October really starts to shine. Victoria can be extremely busy in July and August, and while that creates a great energy around the Inner Harbour and downtown, it isn't necessarily the best way for everyone to experience the city. By October, the difference is noticeable. There are still tourists downtown and cruise ships are still visiting during part of the month, but the huge peak-season crowds have largely disappeared. Popular areas become easier to explore, sidewalks are less congested and the whole city starts to feel a little more relaxed. Restaurants can be easier to get into as well. Victoria has an unusually large food scene for a city our size, but during the height of summer that doesn't necessarily mean it's easy to find a table at the place you want. October takes some of that pressure off. If you're someone who enjoys actually wandering around a destination rather than fighting your way through it, that's a pretty significant advantage. October Is a Very Good Month to Eat Your Way Around Victoria I admit to having a slight bias here, but fall really does suit Victoria's food scene. A warm bakery suddenly becomes much more appealing, as does a bowl of something hot, a cup of coffee or a pint inside one of our historic pubs. Victoria has more restaurants, eateries, pubs and bars per capita than any other Canadian city according to research by Destination Greater Victoria, and October is a great time to explore them. It's also one of my favourite times of year for our food tours through Chinatown and Old Town. The cooler weather is ideal for walking, the streets aren't as crowded and moving between six different food stops feels pretty good when there's a little chill in the air. Our tours run rain or shine, which isn't nearly as intimidating as it sounds. You're moving between indoor food stops throughout the tour, so even on a wet day you're never outside for particularly long before there's something to eat. There are certainly worse ways to deal with October weather. Victoria's Pubs and Live Music Feel Made for Fall Victoria has some fantastic historic pubs, and I think October is when they really come into their own. In July, sitting outside on a patio makes perfect sense. Once October arrives, there's something much more appealing about settling into an old building for dinner and a local beer. The area around Government Street, Bastion Square and the Inner Harbour has plenty of options, and Victoria's craft beer scene gives you another excuse to explore. You could quite happily spend an afternoon wandering downtown, stop at a brewery or two and then head somewhere for dinner. Don't assume the city shuts down once it gets dark, either. Victoria has a surprisingly active live music scene, with several downtown venues offering music throughout the week. We've written a separate guide to live music in downtown Victoria, and a good restaurant followed by some live music in a historic pub makes for a pretty great October evening. Is Butchart Gardens Still Worth Visiting in October? Absolutely. People naturally associate The Butchart Gardens with spring and summer, but the gardens don't suddenly become uninteresting when September ends. October brings fall colour and a completely different atmosphere, while the smaller crowds can make the experience considerably more relaxed than it is during peak summer. If it's your first trip to Victoria and Butchart is high on your list, I wouldn't remove it simply because you're coming in October. On the other hand, if you've only got a short weekend here, don't feel like you have to spend half a day outside downtown. There is easily enough to keep you busy in the city itself. If you're trying to decide how to divide your time, we've also put together a two-day fall itinerary for Victoria that shows how I'd approach a short visit without trying to cram too much into it. Make Time for Beacon Hill Park and the Waterfront If you get a nice October day, take advantage of it. Beacon Hill Park is an easy walk from downtown and is one of my favourite places to see the changing season. From there, you can continue toward Dallas Road and the waterfront, where on a clear fall day the views across the Strait of Juan de Fuca toward the Olympic Mountains can be spectacular. The waterfront is also a good reminder of why layers matter in Victoria. Conditions along Dallas Road can feel completely different from the sheltered streets downtown only a few blocks away. If the wind is coming off the ocean, you'll certainly know you're standing on the edge of the Pacific. You don't need perfect blue skies for the walk to be worthwhile either. Some of the moodier October days can be just as beautiful along the water, provided you've dressed for them. What Should You Pack for Victoria in October? There's no need to overthink this. The most useful thing you can bring is layers. A sweater or fleece with a waterproof outer layer gives you much more flexibility than one enormous winter coat, and comfortable shoes are important because Victoria is best explored on foot. A small umbrella can be useful if you like carrying one, although plenty of locals simply rely on a waterproof jacket. You certainly don't need to pack as though you're heading into a Canadian winter. What you want is clothing that lets you comfortably deal with sunshine, cool temperatures, wind and a little rain — potentially all in the same day. Is Everything Still Open in October? For the most part, Victoria is very much open for business. This isn't a seasonal resort town that shuts its doors when summer ends. People live and work here year-round, and downtown restaurants, shops, museums, pubs and attractions continue operating. Some tourism businesses and seasonal attractions may reduce their hours as visitor numbers drop, so it's always worth checking individual schedules before you go. But you aren't going to arrive in October and find a deserted city. In fact, that's part of the appeal: you're visiting after the busiest part of the tourism season while still having access to essentially everything that makes Victoria worth visiting in the first place. So, Is October a Good Time to Visit Victoria? If you're coming primarily for hot weather, patios and long summer evenings, there are better months to choose. But if your priorities are food, history, walking, architecture, museums, pubs, fall colour and exploring the city at a slower pace, October can be an excellent time to visit. You'll have to accept a little uncertainty with the weather, but that's part of travelling on the West Coast in fall. In exchange, you'll get fewer crowds, comfortable walking temperatures and a city that feels noticeably different from its summertime version. There's something pretty enjoyable about spending a cool afternoon exploring Chinatown and Old Town before ducking into a historic pub or restaurant as it starts getting dark outside. Final Thoughts After years of walking around Victoria for a living, I've learned not to put too much faith in the weather forecast. I've seen days that looked terrible on the forecast turn out beautifully, and I've watched rain blow through almost as quickly as it arrived. October isn't about guaranteeing yourself perfect weather. It's about coming prepared enough that the weather doesn't really matter. Walk the Inner Harbour, explore Chinatown and Old Town, see the fall colours in Beacon Hill Park, eat well, find a historic pub and listen to some live music. If it rains for an hour, find somewhere interesting to wait it out, then put your jacket back on and keep exploring. That's October in Victoria. Comments are closed.
